Mountainbrook Village is a 1,659-home 55+ active adult community set at the base of the Superstition Mountains in Gold Canyon, Arizona, roughly 30-45 minutes east of Phoenix just beyond Apache Junction. Built between 1989 and 2002 by Shea Homes and UDC Homes, it is fully built out today and trades entirely on the resale market, with a steady flow of homes changing hands year-round. Home styles are single-level stucco with tile roofs, offered as single-family homes ranging from about 1,152 to 2,600 sq ft (two to four bedrooms, two to three baths, two-car garages) and attached duplex villas from roughly 1,375 to 1,591 sq ft (two bedrooms, two baths). Villa owners pay a higher HOA in exchange for full exterior and front-yard maintenance including roof care, which is why the community's HOA range spans from around $41/mo for single-family owners up to roughly $300/mo for villa owners. Life here revolves around a six-building community campus with a fitness center, two outdoor pools (a lounge pool and a lap pool), heated spa, billiards room, card room, library, computer lab, hobby and craft studios, and a grand ballroom used for dinner dances, showtime performances, and Tuesday Morning Coffee and News at the Superstition Center. Outside, residents have tennis courts, pickleball courts, bocce ball, horseshoes, shuffleboard, and basketball. A full-time activities director keeps the calendar full with more than 50 clubs and special interest groups — band, ceramics, oil painting, watercolor, stained glass, quilting, sewing, woodcarving, book discussion, bridge, bunco, canasta, poker, chess, darts, bingo, bowling, softball league, yoga, water volleyball, Bible study, a Singles club, a California club, a Supper club, and more. Golf is central to the community's identity. The semi-private Mountain Brook Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 Brian Whitcomb-designed course that opened in 1996 and winds through the neighborhood; it was named one of the Most Improved Golf Courses in the U.S. by Golf Advisor, has a 12-acre practice facility with a short-game area designed by Phil Mickelson, and includes a full-service clubhouse, pro shop, and restaurant. Right next door, Gold Canyon Golf Resort adds two more highly regarded 18-hole courses — Sidewinder and the nationally ranked Dinosaur Mountain — plus a spa and dining with Superstition Mountain views, giving residents easy access to 54 holes of golf at their doorstep. The location is the other big draw. Mountainbrook Village sits in the upper Sonoran Desert at the foot of the Superstitions, with nearly every home enjoying mountain or golf-course views. Lost Dutchman State Park, Canyon Lake, and the Apache Trail are all minutes away, while Mesa, Gilbert, and Chandler — with their full slate of shopping, dining, and medical care — are a 20 to 30 minute drive west on US-60. Residents describe it as small, quiet, and a little remote, but still close to everything, and the mix of full-time residents and winter snowbirds (one-month minimum rentals are permitted) gives the community a social, seasonal rhythm.
