Highland Lakes on Lake Tarpon is a large, well-established 55+ community set on 684 acres of gently rolling land along the western shore of Lake Tarpon — the largest freshwater lake in Pinellas County. Built primarily between 1977 and 1989 on what was once a citrus grove, the community was developed in multiple phases and today contains 2,454 homes arranged along quiet cul-de-sacs and meandering sidewalked lanes. Mature landscaping — willow trees, southern magnolias, bald cypress — fountains in the community's many small lakes, and 105 acres of conservation land give the neighborhood a park-like, sedate quality that distinguishes it from newer master-planned communities. Home styles cover the full range for a 55+ buyer: single-family homes with two or three bedrooms and formal living and dining rooms, attached villas with garages and screened lanais, townhomes, and low-maintenance condos. Sizes run from about 700 square feet on the smallest one-bedroom villas up to nearly 2,300 square feet on the larger single-family residences. Because the community was built in phases with multiple sub-associations, monthly HOA fees vary significantly by village and home type — starting around $126 and ranging up to roughly $700 depending on whether the sub-association covers additional exterior maintenance, roof reserves, or insurance. The centerpiece of the community is its 27-hole executive golf course — three separate 9-hole layouts named Red, White, and Blue that wind through the neighborhoods. The course is private and for the exclusive use of residents and their guests, and play is unlimited and free with home ownership. There is also a driving range on site. Golf is consistently cited by residents as the single most popular activity, and the course's quiet executive-length design makes it approachable for casual players while still giving serious golfers something to work on. Recreation extends well beyond golf. The main clubhouse anchors social life with a library, meeting rooms, card and billiards rooms, a ballroom/auditorium with a full performance stage (used for community theatre and professional shows), a multi-use arena with a walking track, indoor pickleball, basketball, and a fitness room. Outside the main clubhouse is a geothermal-heated 125,000-gallon Olympic-sized pool with a heated whirlpool spa, an open-air pavilion that seats 90, and a cabana. A separate Arts & Crafts Annex houses ceramics, lapidary, stained glass, and woodworking studios. Tennis, pickleball, bocce, and shuffleboard courts round out the outdoor offerings. On the lake itself, residents share the Lake Tarpon Lodge — a rustic waterfront building with a stone fireplace, hardwood floors, and a wraparound porch looking out over the water. The Lodge complex includes a second geothermal-heated pool, a fishing pier, a boat ramp, a picnic area with grills, horseshoe pits, and a certified butterfly garden. Two community pontoon boats are available for resident lake cruises, and there is a free, locked RV and boat storage lot — a rare amenity at this price point. The 105 acres of conservation area within the community include walking trails and seven small lakes, four of them fishable. Socially, Highland Lakes runs on a full-time activities director and more than 75 resident-run clubs and interest groups — everything from acting, bingo, bowling, bridge, and book club to canoeing, water aerobics, garden club, and music ensembles. A community newsletter, The Highlander, keeps residents current on events. The atmosphere leans established and friendly rather than flashy; most residents are year-round, with a meaningful snowbird contingent in winter. Location is one of Highland Lakes' strongest assets. The community sits just off US-19 in northern Pinellas County, about 30 minutes north of downtown Tampa and minutes from the Dunedin Causeway to Honeymoon Island State Park and the Gulf beaches. Downtown Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Tarpon Springs, and Palm Harbor's own small-town core are all nearby for restaurants, shopping, festivals, and waterfront dining. Two international airports (Tampa and St. Pete-Clearwater), top-rated medical care, and Tampa Bay's professional sports are all within easy driving distance.
