Colonia de Los Alamos is a 974-home, 55+ active adult community in Green Valley, Arizona, tucked into the high Sonoran Desert about 25 minutes south of Tucson off I-19. Built between 1997 and 2014 and now resale-only, it's actually an umbrella community made up of three distinct subdivisions — SpringPointe, Viewpoint, and The Villages — each with its own mix of single-family homes and attached townhomes ranging from roughly 889 to 2,161 square feet. Most homes are two to three bedrooms with two baths and a two-car garage, built in a Southwestern style that blends stucco exteriors, tile roofs, and desert landscaping with mountain views of the Santa Ritas. The community's own amenity footprint is modest but well-used: a clubhouse, outdoor pool, tennis courts, pickleball courts, shuffleboard courts, a covered outdoor patio, and multipurpose meeting rooms. Some sections also have wallyball courts. The real draw, though, is what comes with the deed — mandatory membership in Green Valley Recreation (GVR), a non-profit with over 23,000 members that owns and operates fourteen recreation centers across Green Valley. GVR membership opens access to 13 pools and spas, six fitness centers, a 24-court pickleball complex, tennis, bocce, racquetball, table tennis, billiards, horseshoes, water and sand volleyball, and specialty studios for ceramics, clay, woodworking, lapidary, photography, and computer work. Members can take from more than 1,000 classes and lectures annually and join any of roughly 60 GVR clubs covering everything from dance, music, cards, and drama to travel, crafts, and sports. The West Center for Performing Arts hosts a regular "GVR Live!" series that has brought in acts like The Second City and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and the annual Senior Games draw nearly 1,000 competitors across 30+ events each spring. The HOA itself is intentionally light — it covers common-area maintenance, facility upkeep, and road repairs, and fees at the subdivision level can be as low as roughly $25 semi-annually in some sections. GVR membership runs separately: roughly $545 per person per year in dues, a one-time membership change fee of about $3,200 at purchase, and a $470 transfer fee. GVR membership is deeded and automatic — it conveys with the property and can't be opted out of. Location is a big part of the appeal. Green Valley sits at the base of the Santa Rita Mountains in a quieter pocket of southern Arizona, with Tucson, Tucson International Airport, and major medical centers all within 25–30 minutes. Daily conveniences — Safeway, Sprouts, Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, and a cluster of local restaurants along North La Canada Drive — are minutes away. Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital and Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital are close. Area attractions include the Titan Missile Museum, Madera Canyon (a world-class birding destination), several nearby golf courses, and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Green Valley itself has over 300 shopping, dining, and retail outlets, giving Colonia residents the rare combination of a low-key retirement setting with near-urban convenience.
