Sundance is a 55+ golf retirement community tucked into the southern portion of Buckeye, Arizona, just south of Interstate 10 within the larger 2,000-acre master-planned Sundance development. Unlike the sprawling Sun City-style developments that dominate the West Valley, Sundance takes a smaller-scale, more intimate approach: approximately 1,100 single-story ranch homes arranged in a loop that wraps around the Sundance Golf Club, so residents are never more than a short walk or golf cart ride from either the course or the clubhouse. The heart of community life is the 15,000-square-foot Active Adult clubhouse, which is reserved exclusively for residents of the age-restricted loop. Inside you'll find a state-of-the-art fitness center, arts and crafts studio, billiards room, card rooms, poker room, library, ballroom, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. Outside, residents enjoy a heated resort-style pool, a heated lap pool, spa, tennis courts, pickleball courts, bocce ball courts, and racquetball courts. A full-time activities director keeps the social calendar full, with 20+ clubs and classes ranging from aqua exercise, ballroom dancing, and balance/stretch classes to bingo, bunco, bridge, bowling, quilting, and even airplane and cookbook clubs. Community dances, showtime performances, and gatherings are a regular part of life here. The Sundance Golf Club anchors the community — an 18-hole championship course designed by Greg Nash that winds through the Sonoran Desert with panoramic views of the White Tank and Sierra Estrella Mountains. Four sets of tees (5,300 to 7,000 yards) make it approachable for players of every skill level, and it's known as one of the most affordable full-length courses in the entire Phoenix area. Golf fees are separate from the HOA, with daily rates and seasonal/annual pass options available. The on-site restaurant and bar — right next to the clubhouse — is a favorite gathering spot after a round of golf or a pickleball match. Homes are all single-story ranch-style and were built in phases: Hancock (Hallcraft) Homes broke ground in 2002, Meritage Homes took over in 2005 and built through 2014, and LGI Homes of Arizona finished the final 151 lots between 2015 and 2020. Other builders with a smaller presence include Del Webb, D.R. Horton, Canterra, and Pulte. Floor plans generally range from about 1,000 to 2,217 square feet — most with two bedrooms plus a den, two to two-and-a-half baths, and a two-car garage. Later-phase Meritage homes incorporate energy-efficient systems that help tame Arizona summer electric bills, and many homes include owned or leased solar. Lots back to the golf course or open desert, and covered patios, pools, and low-maintenance xeriscaping are common. The 55+ section is essentially built out, so nearly all activity today is resale; the adjacent non-age-restricted Village at Sundance neighborhood by Century Communities offers new construction for family buyers. Buckeye itself is the westernmost town in Maricopa County and one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, but Sundance still delivers small-town charm — quiet streets, friendly neighbors, and spectacular mountain views. Downtown Phoenix is about 30 minutes east via I-10, Goodyear's Palm Valley shopping and dining is 10-12 minutes away, and Sundance Towne Center at Yuma and Watson (Walmart Supercenter, Lowe's, Cracker Barrel, and more) is a short drive for everyday needs. For budget-minded retirees who want a real golf-course lifestyle, affordable home prices, and an active social scene without the scale of a 40,000-resident mega-community, Sundance hits a genuinely rare sweet spot in the West Valley.
