Four Seasons at Upper Freehold is a gated, 55+ active adult community tucked into the rolling farmland of western Monmouth County, New Jersey, about two miles from the historic borough of Allentown. Built by K. Hovnanian between 2001 and 2004, the community is comprised of 387 detached single-family homes arranged around ponds, fountains, and open space, with 24-hour guarded entry off Extonville Road. The centerpiece is a 17,500-square-foot clubhouse that functions as the social hub of the neighborhood. Inside, residents have access to an indoor pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a sauna, a grand ballroom, two card rooms (one with a wide-screen TV), a billiards room, an arts and crafts studio, a library, and a computer/business center. Outside the clubhouse, the amenity package continues with an outdoor swimming pool, two tennis courts, bocce courts, shuffleboard, a putting green, and walking paths that wind past landscaped ponds with fountains. A full-time activities director keeps an unusually full calendar for a community of this size — standing clubs and programs include ballroom dance, Latin ballroom dance, bridge, book club, pilates, yoga, chair fitness, a needlecraft group, planned day trips, holiday parties, and monthly movie nights, plus plenty of resident-started special interest groups. Homes are all detached, energy-efficient single-family homes built to New Jersey Energy-Star standards. There are nine original floor plans ranging from roughly 1,480 to 3,430 square feet, with two to three bedrooms, two to three-and-a-half baths, and attached two-car garages on lots averaging about a fifth of an acre. Popular models include the Captiva, Sanibel, Sequoia, Bonaire, and Martinique, with many homes customized over the years to add lofts, basements, sunrooms, and upgraded kitchens. Several homes back to ponds for premium water views. Construction finished in 2004, so the community is resale-only — no new builds available. The HOA handles lawn care, snow removal, the gated entry, and all common-area and amenity maintenance, which is a big part of the draw for downsizers coming out of larger family homes in central Jersey. Residents can walk to downtown Allentown — a preserved 1700s-era borough full of antique shops, small restaurants, and gift stores — and are roughly 16 minutes from Trenton, 40 miles from Philadelphia, 60 miles from New York City, and about 25-30 minutes from the Jersey Shore. Six Flags Great Adventure is 13 miles away for visiting grandkids, the Cream Ridge Winery and several Monmouth County public golf courses (Gamblers Ridge, Charleston Springs, Hominy Hill) are minutes away, and RWJ Hamilton Hospital anchors the medical landscape to the west. Access to the NJ Turnpike, I-195, I-295, and Route 130 makes commuting and day trips straightforward despite the rural feel of the immediate area.
