North Jersey runs meaningfully above the national average on overall cost of living. The Bergen-Passaic metro is roughly 22% higher than the national average, and Morris County's cost-of-living index sits around 142 (42% above national). Housing is the single biggest driver: Bergen-Passaic housing costs run about 59% above the national average, groceries about 7% higher, healthcare about 12% higher, and utilities about 3% higher. Median sale prices in late 2025 were roughly $740,000 in Bergen County and $640,000 in Morris County, with Passaic County notably more affordable at a median home value near $350,000. Retiree Specific: New Jersey is friendlier to retirees than its reputation suggests. Social Security benefits are fully exempt from state income tax regardless of income.
