Seven Oaks is Bakersfield's premier master-planned community, spanning nearly 1,800 acres of mixed-use development in the city's southwest corridor. Established in the early 1990s by Castle & Cooke California and now being expanded by Bolthouse Properties, Seven Oaks has grown over more than three decades into a collection of distinct gated neighborhoods woven together by parks, tree-lined streets, landscaped paseos, and an interconnected pedestrian and bike path network. It is consistently described as the most prestigious residential address in Bakersfield. The community is built around the 27-hole Seven Oaks Country Club, designed by world-renowned architect Robert Muir Graves. Three distinct nines — The Oaks, The Lakes, and The Islands — opened between 1991 and 2004 and are played in pairs for an 18-hole round. Beyond championship golf, the private country club (separate membership) offers two junior Olympic-sized swimming pools, a tennis and pickleball pavilion, a full fitness center and studio, and four dining venues including the Oak Room overlooking the 18th green, the Grille, the Island Cafe, and a snack bar. Year-round member events, themed dinners, live music, and wine tastings anchor an active social scene. Seven Oaks is truly multi-generational. It contains distinct neighborhoods designed for every stage of life — from first-time-buyer enclaves like Highgate Park and Highgate Place, to family-focused communities like Windermere, Windsor Park, Grand Island Village, Belcourt, and Brighton Parks, to dedicated 55+ active adult sections including The Greens at Seven Oaks and Highgate Regents. Home styles range widely, from luxury custom estates on 15,000-32,000 sq ft lots in Highgate Shires, to single-family homes in the 2,000-3,000 sq ft range, to low-maintenance active adult villas, to newer loft and one- and two-bedroom apartments at Park Square and the 520-unit Park Center at Westbridge Seven Oaks. Home sizes across the master plan span roughly 1,250 to over 8,000 square feet. Location is a major draw. Seven Oaks is bounded by Stockdale Highway and Ming Avenue, west of State Route 58, with walkable access to The Park at River Walk (an amphitheater, man-made lakes, and trail network near the Kern River), The Shops at River Walk (Target, Sprouts, restaurants including Eureka!), Belcourt Village, Mustang Square, and The Marketplace with Regal Edwards cinema. CSU Bakersfield is adjacent. The Panama-Buena Vista and Kern High school districts — including A-rated Stockdale High, one of Bakersfield's top public schools — serve the area, though this matters less for the 55+ segment than for families. The community boasts a very low crime rate and a household income well above the Bakersfield average. Ongoing expansion continues through Westbridge Seven Oaks, the newest district, which is adding walkability, retail, parks, and the landmark Park Center multifamily community. New-home buyers can still purchase from Castle & Cooke and other builders in active Highgate and Belcourt neighborhoods. For retirement-minded buyers who want a polished, upscale, amenity-rich setting without the isolation of an age-restricted-only bubble, Seven Oaks offers the best of both worlds — with The Greens and Highgate Regents available as dedicated 55+ enclaves within the broader master plan.
