PGA West is a legendary 2,000+ acre master-planned golf resort community in La Quinta, California, set dramatically at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains in the Coachella Valley. Widely recognized as the "Western Home of Golf in America," it offers 109 holes across nine championship courses designed by five golf legends — Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, and Greg Norman — including the famous Pete Dye Stadium Course with its island-green 17th hole "Alcatraz" and the Nicklaus Tournament Course. Together these two courses host The American Express, the PGA Tour's annual January stop in the desert. Originally developed by Ernie Vossler and Joe Walser Jr.'s Landmark Land Co., PGA West broke ground in the mid-1980s with the Stadium Course opening in 1986. Subsequent decades of phased development built out roughly 6,000 homes across more than a half-dozen distinct gated sub-communities, each with its own HOA, aesthetic, and price point. The community was acquired in 2020 by Century Golf Partners and Hankuk Industry, who have invested in renovations, a new Performance Lab (opened November 2025), and ongoing club modernization. Residential variety is one of PGA West's defining strengths. Condos in Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament start in the mid-$300s; mid-size single-family homes fill the Palmer Private, Nicklaus Private, and Greg Norman neighborhoods; the 625-home Legends enclave (built 1999–2006) offers larger single-story homes along the Nicklaus Tournament and Weiskopf courses; Tom Weiskopf and Peninsula Park offer estate-scale homes up to 6,000+ square feet; and the newer PGA West Signature section has delivered contemporary detached homes as recently as 2022, with full buildout planned around 220 residences. Floor plans range from roughly 1,283 square feet to over 5,000 square feet, with architectural styles spanning 1980s Spanish-influenced desert to modern mid-century. Beyond golf, residents enjoy a resort lifestyle centered on multiple clubhouses, casual and fine dining restaurants, a state-of-the-art Sports Club with a junior Olympic pool, 10 tennis courts (hard and Har-Tru), 16 pickleball courts, bocce, fitness classes, a dedicated dog park, scenic lakes, and a drive-in movie theater designed for golf carts. Golf club membership is entirely optional — homeowners can buy in without joining, or choose Premier, Sports, or Social tiers when they do. The 24-hour guard-gated entrances and multiple sub-community gates provide layered security, and the lock-and-leave lifestyle is a major draw for snowbirds and seasonal residents. While not age-restricted, PGA West skews heavily toward active retirees, second-home owners, and golf-focused professionals. The vibe is social and country-club-oriented without feeling stuffy — residents describe it as "living on a college campus" with near-endless club calendars, tournaments, social events, and neighbor-initiated activities. Location is a genuine asset: the main entry on Jefferson Street connects directly to Highway 111 (into Palm Desert and Palm Springs) and Interstate 10, with Palm Springs International Airport roughly 25–40 minutes away, world-class shopping at El Paseo and Westfield Palm Desert nearby, and destination events like Coachella, Stagecoach, the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, and Eldorado Polo Club all within a short drive.
