New Horizons South Bay is one of the oldest planned 55+ communities in the United States, developed between 1963 and 1964 on 80 landscaped acres in the heart of Torrance, California. With 600 condominium residences spread across two-story buildings and single-level bungalows, it pioneered the active adult lifestyle concept in Southern California and still delivers it today — at a price point that's remarkably accessible for the South Bay. Homes range from roughly 950 to 1,133 square feet with one to three bedrooms and one to two bathrooms. All units are all-electric, a hallmark of the original Mid-Century Gold Medallion design. Many have been tastefully updated over the years with quartz counters, remodeled kitchens and baths, laminate or wood flooring, crown molding, vinyl windows, and custom window treatments, while retaining the charming Mid-Century aesthetic. Layouts include lower (marked 'A') and upper ('B') units, plus the coveted bungalows. Inventory turns over slowly — residents tend to stay for the long haul, and listings often sell quickly. The centerpiece of the community is an on-site 9-hole golf course originally designed by Ray Watts and Ted Robinson Sr. — a rarity for a condo community and something you simply won't find in newer 55+ developments. Beyond golf, residents enjoy two swimming pools (including a year-round heated salt-water pool), a spa and jacuzzi, his-and-her saunas, a full gym with locker rooms and showers, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce, croquet, and shuffleboard. The main clubhouse houses a billiard hall, card and golf rooms, a grand ballroom with a large kitchen, a lounge, and outdoor BBQs. A separate sports facility and dedicated spaces for ceramics, woodworking, crafts, ping-pong, piano, art, and a community library round out the amenity package. The social life is genuinely active. Interest groups include billiards, bingo, bridge, bunco, ceramics, cards, a conservation club, craft corner, photography, knitting, water aerobics, and the welcoming 'Getting to Know You' group for new residents. Holiday parties, outings, and a monthly resident newspaper keep the calendar full. The HOA covers water, trash, common-area maintenance, insurance, and management, letting residents focus on lifestyle instead of chores. Location is a major draw. The community sits directly behind a retail strip on Sepulveda Boulevard with CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, restaurants, and banks within walking distance. The Del Amo Fashion Center, Costco, and Village Del Amo Shopping Center are minutes away. Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center are both nearby, and the local YMCA — one of the best facilities of its kind in the country — offers senior-focused classes just next door. Torrance Beach and Redondo Beach Pier are a 15-minute drive, Palos Verdes hills are visible from many upper units, and LAX sits about 12 miles north. Interstates 405 and 105 provide quick access to greater Los Angeles.
