Hill Country Retreat is one of San Antonio's most established 55+ active adult communities, developed by Del Webb starting in 2006 and now fully built out with 1,904 single-family homes on the Far West Side of the city. Tucked just off Culebra Road outside Loop 1604 in the 78253 zip code, the community sits on rolling Texas Hill Country terrain with mature oak trees, natural landscaping, and cascading waterfalls at the entrance that set a resort-like tone from the moment you drive in. The social heart of the community is 'The Resort,' a 28,000-square-foot clubhouse packed with amenities: a state-of-the-art two-story fitness center, an indoor lap pool with resistance lanes, two outdoor pools, two hot tubs, an indoor walking track, a grand ballroom, card rooms, arts and crafts studios, a ceramics studio, a library, and multi-purpose meeting rooms. Outside the clubhouse, residents have access to pickleball and tennis courts, bocce ball, horseshoes, and approximately 4 to 5 miles of paved walking and biking trails that wind through the community and connect to greenbelt views. A full-time lifestyle staff and activities director keep the calendar full, with over 120 active special interest groups and social clubs — among them archery, art, bridge, bunco, billiards, bicycling, birdwatching, bocce, book discussion, bowling, brew crew, ceramics, cooking, country dancing, garden club, golf, needlecraft, painting, pickleball, scrapbooking, wine club, and dance club. Regular programming includes movie nights, game nights, potluck dinners, health and fitness presentations, ballroom dances, and organized day trips. Del Webb built 23 floor plans ranging from 1,109 to 2,669 square feet with two to three bedrooms and two- to three-car garages, including the popular Garden Series (Noir Coast, Taft Street) and Classic Series (Abbeyville, Summerwood, Martin Ray). In 2013, Village Builders (a Lennar brand) acquired 100 lots and added six larger plans ranging from 2,150 to 2,838 square feet, giving the community a broader price spectrum than most Del Webb properties its age. Homes feature open-concept layouts, walk-in closets, and covered patios; Village Builders homes tend to command the highest resale prices, some topping $500K–$600K. The community is gated and golf-cart friendly, with a Board of Directors, six committees, and an HOA that handles common-area maintenance, landscaping, gate access, and trash/recycling through Tiger Sanitation. Utilities come from CPS Energy (electric), Grey Forest Utilities (gas), and SAWS (water/sewer). Location-wise, residents are about 30 minutes from downtown San Antonio and San Antonio International Airport, four miles from SeaWorld, and within easy reach of La Cantera, The Rim, Alamo Ranch shopping, and major medical centers including Methodist Hospital, Christus Santa Rosa, and the South Texas Medical Center. Hill Country wineries, state parks, and golf courses like Briggs Ranch and Cedar Creek round out the lifestyle appeal.
