Location: Oak Run on SR 200
Oak Run sits on State Road 200 with direct access to I-75 and Dunnellon just a few minutes away. Dunnellon has the Rainbow River, where you can tube, kayak, or watch manatees, and the town runs a singing river cruise for something a little different. Back toward Ocala on SR 200, a Bealls Outlet has become a local shopping staple after the regular Bealls location folded into the outlet format.
Community size and amenities at Oak Run
The basics
Oak Run has 3,509 residences. One golf course serves the community and draws players from neighboring communities, mostly because the rates are reasonable and the conditions are good.
Fitness centers and pools
Oak Run has two fitness centers. The main facility is the one that impressed Matt, who currently drives a half-hour each way to reach a gym. Having a fitness center he can walk or bike to is a real change.
The pool complex was recently renovated and has four distinct areas:
- A walking pool for low-impact exercise
- A lap pool for serious swimmers
- A whirlpool
- A general swimming pool residents call the "play pool"
Sports beyond golf
Matt played college football as a strong safety, and Oak Run gives him somewhere to put that competitive energy. The community has softball, pickleball, and basketball, so residents with different athletic backgrounds can find a regular game.
Entertainment and social life
Like most 55+ communities, Oak Run's activity calendar runs heaviest on weekdays. The main ballroom hosts comedians and other entertainers and doubles as the stage for the community's theater group, which produces plays year-round. A new bar area was recently added along with expanded outdoor seating that looks out over the golf course. The restaurant is scheduled for updates.
HOA fees and housing options
HOA fees at Oak Run run from $150 to $350-plus per month. The higher end includes yard maintenance; the lower end means you handle your own landscaping. All fees include basic cable (roughly 10 channels). The community also allows fencing around properties, which isn't the case in every 55+ development.
Golf carts
Oak Run is a golf cart community. Residents can take personal carts onto the golf course as long as they're electric.
Dog parks
Oak Run has two dog parks, so pets have dedicated space for exercise and socializing.
