Oak Run isn't just one of Florida's largest 55+ communities — it's a small city unto itself, spread across 1,400 acres of rolling hills in Ocala with 3,509 homes, five clubhouses, six pools, and over 100 clubs and activities. Built by Decca between 1985 and 2007, the community has matured into something rare: a place where the infrastructure is fully built out, the landscaping is lush, and the social fabric is deeply woven. The community is organized into 26 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character shaped by when it was built. Earlier neighborhoods (1985-1995) feature frame-construction homes with aluminum or vinyl siding ranging from around 700 to 1,500 square feet — compact, affordable, and perfect for snowbirds or those downsizing. The newer neighborhoods (1995-2007) shifted to concrete block and stucco construction with homes reaching up to 2,900 square feet, open floor plans, and two-car garages. Twenty different floor plan models span the range, so there's genuine variety — from cozy two-bedroom retreats to spacious three-bedroom homes with dens. An interesting piece of Oak Run lore: the community started numbering its neighborhoods sequentially, but when they reached 13, they switched to names because residents didn't want to live in the "unlucky" neighborhood. The five clubhouses anchor daily life. Palm Grove Club is the 30,000-square-foot social hub with a resort-style pool, spa, fitness center, catering kitchen, and a grand ballroom that hosts dances, shows, and community events. The Orchid Club offers a more intimate setting with a secondary fitness center, billiards room, dedicated ceramics studio, arts and crafts rooms, a library, and card rooms where bridge and canasta games run daily. Island Club is the aquatic center — three specialty pools including a lap pool, an aquacise pool, and a leisure pool, plus a whirlpool spa. The Aqua Sports Club houses the indoor heated pool, extending the swimming season year-round. And the Royal Oaks Golf Club ties it all together with an 18-hole championship course, a unique 6-hole practice course, driving range, pro shop, and the Oak Room Bar & Grill. The golf course deserves special mention. Designed by Terry LaGree and opened in 1997, it plays 6,703 yards at par 72 with a slope of 118 from the back tees. Mature oaks frame the fairways, and the course is meticulously maintained. Golf leagues, tournaments, and social outings run continuously. But golf is just one thread — Oak Run's club culture is where the community truly comes alive. With 58+ organized clubs and over 100 activities, there is something for virtually every interest. Regional heritage clubs (Italian-American, German American, Irish American, New York, New Jersey, Southern States, Upper Midwest) help transplants find their tribe. Fitness options go well beyond the gym — Ballet Barre, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba, aquacise, and water volleyball are all on the weekly schedule. Creative pursuits include dedicated ceramics, quilting, woodworking, and photography groups. The performing arts scene is active with the Troubadours chorus, Showcase of Stars variety shows, and the Chorus Line dancers. Card players have their pick of bridge (multiple weekly games), pinochle, euchre, canasta, mahjong, and poker. And for those who prefer the outdoors, the Anglers club, motorcycle club, and hiking groups take full advantage of the adjacent Ocala National Forest. That adjacency to the Ocala National Forest is one of Oak Run's most distinctive features. The community essentially borders 387,000 acres of protected wilderness dotted with over 600 springs, lakes, and rivers and laced with 400+ miles of trails. Residents have access to hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding practically in their backyard. Silver Springs State Park and Rainbow Springs State Park — two of Florida's most spectacular natural springs — are both within easy driving distance. Security is taken seriously. Oak Run is fully gated with three staffed guard gates providing 24/7 coverage. Visitors must present photo ID, have their license scanned, and be verified with the homeowner before entry. Electronic access ensures smooth resident entry while maintaining the community's secure feel. The Oak Room Bar & Grill, under new management since April 2025, serves as the community's dining hub. The restaurant offers elevated American comfort food at lunch and relaxed fine dining at dinner, with special event nights featuring live entertainment. It's open Monday through Saturday and has become a genuine gathering place — not just a golf course restaurant but a social anchor. What makes Oak Run work is the combination of scale and affordability. With a median home price around $223,000 and no CDD fees, this is one of the most accessible large-scale 55+ communities in Florida. HOA fees vary by neighborhood ($55 to $178/month) and cover lawn maintenance, gate guard, cable, trash removal, irrigation water, and common grounds. Residents get country club amenities at a price point that doesn't require a country club budget — and the sheer volume of clubs, activities, and social programming means there's always something happening without anyone being pressured to participate.
