Why We Retired in Trilogy Orlando | 55+ Community Review

A real couple's move to Trilogy Orlando: what eight months actually looks like

Peter and Nerra spent 29 years in Phoenix before deciding retirement called for something different. They considered Panama, Costa Rica, and Ecuador before settling on Florida, and after eight months at Trilogy Orlando, they have a clear-eyed view of what 55+ community life is actually like.

Their story is useful for anyone sizing up active adult communities in Florida, especially the questions around location, lifestyle, and whether these places live up to the marketing.

From Phoenix to Florida: why location matters in retirement

The couple had originally moved to Phoenix from Toronto 29 years earlier. When they started thinking about a next move, international options came up first. What pushed them toward Florida was infrastructure.

"When you're retired, you want to have infrastructure there," Peter explained. "You want to know the medical facilities are there if you need them, you want to make sure you always have power and internet, and the roads don't get washed out."

Florida also kept them in the same time zone as family in Toronto, and their daughter already lived nearby in Lake Mary. That proximity turned out to matter more than they expected: their daughter was impressed enough by what she saw at Trilogy that she and her husband are now planning their own move to Del Webb Minneola.

Breaking down 55+ community stereotypes

Both Peter and Nerra came in with reservations about the demographic. "We had another visual of 55+ as being a lot older people with blue hair, walkers, and wheelchairs everywhere," Nerra admitted. "But we were very pleasantly surprised by the type of community this really is, extremely active."

What they found instead: residents in their 80s keeping up with yoga, swimming, pickleball, and daily gym sessions. Peter and Nerra say some of those neighbors "run circles around" them. The running joke in the community is that people seem to be aging backwards.

The YouTube research strategy that saved time and money

Before flying to Florida, they spent time on YouTube watching community tours through the Explore55Plus channel featuring Michael and J. The no-pressure format let them rule out communities without making a single trip.

"It saved us a lot of leg work because we were able to see all these communities and really filter out the ones we weren't interested in," Peter noted.

Narrowing down the right community

Their hard requirement: within 45 minutes of Orlando airport. That narrowed the list to a handful of communities they looked at seriously:

  • Trilogy Orlando, their final choice
  • Solera, under consideration
  • Palms at Sanola, visited, but still under construction at the time
  • Victoria Gardens, ruled out as too far north

Their agent Patty sent listings while they were still in Phoenix. They gave feedback on each one, which helped her understand what they actually wanted before their February visit rather than starting from scratch on arrival.

The moment at Trilogy Orlando

Trilogy had been at the back of Nerra's mind throughout the search. "We absolutely love the clubhouse at Trilogy, and I think that was at the back of my mind the whole time," she said.

When they finally walked through it in person, the decision came quickly. They looked at four homes that day and put an offer on the first one they saw.

Eight months later: life at Trilogy Orlando

The maintenance-free setup has delivered what they wanted: no pool upkeep, no separate gym membership, and a full calendar of activities built into the community. The social structure has been as valuable as the amenities, giving their days shape and keeping them physically active in ways Phoenix hadn't.

The ripple effect on family has been a bonus. Watching Peter and Nerra settle in was enough to convince their daughter and son-in-law to start their own search, which landed at Del Webb Minneola.
