What residents of The Villages say about living there
The Villages has over 145,000 residents as of 2023, making it by far the largest 55+ community in Florida, a state with more than 500 deed-restricted or age-targeted active adult communities. We talked to people who live there to find out what daily life is actually like, who tends to love it, and who ends up wishing they'd looked elsewhere before signing.
The Villages by the numbers
The scale here is hard to overstate. The community functions close to a self-contained city, and residents say they can go weeks without leaving. That's partly practical: golf carts are street-legal throughout The Villages, so getting to a restaurant, a pool, or a pickleball court doesn't require a car. In March, at peak season, you'll hit restaurant waits and golf cart traffic jams, including the kind caused by a Sand Hill crane crossing the road at rush hour.
Who thrives at The Villages
The residents we interviewed painted a consistent picture of who fits in best:
- Avid golfers who want unlimited access to courses
- Outgoing people who want constant social interaction, not occasional doses of it
- Anyone who likes what one resident called "cruise ship energy" (always something happening, always people around)
- Adults who want to be surrounded by peers at the same life stage
The golf cart culture comes up a lot. For residents who no longer feel comfortable driving a car, a golf cart gives them real independence within the community. You can reach virtually any corner of The Villages without touching a steering wheel.
We also met a handful of "summer birds," retired teachers mostly, who flip the snowbird model. They come during Florida's hot summers and rent their homes out during peak winter season, which covers most or all of their housing costs. The Villages allows short-term rentals, which many other 55+ communities don't.
When The Villages probably isn't the right fit
Several residents were candid about this. As one put it: "Why would you move to The Villages and be a recluse?" The whole culture is built around engagement. If that sounds exhausting rather than appealing, it probably is. You might want to look at other communities if:
- You prefer a quieter, smaller setting
- Constant activity feels like too much rather than not enough
- You're more introverted and want peaceful stretches during your day
- Easy access to cultural amenities outside the gates matters a lot to you
Visit in March before you decide
Residents say this consistently: if you want to know what you're getting into, visit in March. That's when restaurant waits are longest, golf cart traffic is heaviest, and the community is at full capacity. If a March visit leaves you energized, you'll be happy year-round. If it leaves you drained, that's useful information before you buy.
Finding the right community among Florida's 500+ options
The challenge with developer sales agents is that they know their community well but aren't incentivized to help you compare it to the forty others that might suit you better.
