Spruce Creek Preserve is an intimate 55+ gated community in Dunnellon, Florida, developed by Del Webb on 416 acres of rolling countryside about 10 miles southwest of Ocala. The community is bordered on three sides by the 4,000-acre Ross Prairie State Forest, giving residents a nature-preserve setting where wild turkeys, sandhill cranes, and deer are regular sights on the streets. With 625 single-family homes, 44 villas, and 6 townhomes (675 total), it's deliberately smaller than the mega-communities nearby — and that intimacy is a big part of the appeal. The centerpiece is The Preserve Golf Club, an 18-hole championship course designed by Terry Doss (opened 1997), par 71 at 6,540 yards. It's semi-private, open to the public, and home to the Sandwedge Café, a pro shop, putting green, and practice facilities. Golf is not included in the HOA, so residents who don't play aren't subsidizing those who do. Homes range from about 820 to nearly 2,400 square feet, with two or three bedrooms, attached one- or two-car garages, and single-level, low-maintenance living. Construction ran from 1996 to around 2016, so resale is the only option today. HOA fees are a standout feature — among the most affordable in Central Florida 55+ communities — and include grounds maintenance, a 24-hour guarded gate, community roads, the pool, and community management. The clubhouse is the social hub, with an arts and crafts room, card room, billiards, ballroom, library, and community computers. The fitness center offers equipment and classes. Outside, residents enjoy a heated outdoor pool and whirlpool spa, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce, shuffleboard, horseshoes, a basketball court, and walking/biking trails winding through oak woodlands. RV and boat storage is available on-site, and the community has its own fishing areas. Social life is active and tight-knit. Clubs include the Aristocrats Club, Coffee Social Club, Bingo Club, Garden Club, Jet Sets Singles Club, Preserved Players Drama Club, Friends of the Library, Midwest Club, Sunshine Club, plus bridge, bunco, canasta, ceramics, bocce, billiards, and a cancer support group. Fitness classes, golf lessons, and craft classes run for all skill levels. Location is a genuine strength. Dunnellon sits in Marion County — the Horse Capital of the World — with Ocala about 10 miles northeast via Hwy 200. The Rainbow River and Withlacoochee River are minutes away for kayaking, tubing, and fishing, and Rainbow Springs State Park is a short drive. Grocery, medical, and shopping are concentrated along the Hwy 200 corridor heading into Ocala, including the World Equestrian Center. For a small community, it offers an unusually good balance of seclusion, nature, and access to full-service amenities.
